Visitor centers and museums: The national parks have visitor centers: Death Valley, Joshua Tree, and Mojave National Preserve — as do several state parks in the region.  Among the museums outside the desert with desert exhibits and collections are: California Science Center, Los Angeles; San Bernardino County Museum, Redlands; and the Oakland Museum of California, Oakland.

Maps: Websites of conservation agencies (see below). U.S. Geological Survey: https://store.usgs.gov/maps .Automobile Club of Southern California: Its offices provide maps to members. National Geographic Maps: https://natgeomaps.com .

Books: Leading publishers on California topics are the University of California Press, https://ucpress.edu , and Heyday Books, https://heydaybooks.com . Many titles are issued by other major publishers and smaller regional presses. Libraries will have major titles but vary in their other holdings. Best places to find local items are independent bookstores, park visitor centers, and some museum stores.
